Oulu X Comics Festival will begin at the Oulunsalo library on 18th of November at 5:00 p.m. The evening’s opening ceremony can also be followed via live stream. Opening speech is given by the art director of the festival and cartoonist Harri Filppa.
This time, the second year of the event, three winners will be announced in the Comic Strip World Championship competition. In addition to the world champion, the 2nd place runner up and the audience’s favorite will also receive fame and glory. Karoliina Korhonen, artist of the world-renowned Finnish Nightmares comic books, will arrive to be interviewed by the ceremony host Nyyssölä.
Superhero wrestler Black Peider is an alter ego of comics artist Petteri Tikkanen. The artist will be interviewed in a laid-back manner by Asta Salomaa. World peace will be proclaimed through the world with a smile by the Oulu-born phenomenon, Air Guitar World Championships. Black Peider, who placed second in the competition in 1999, knowing that the pen is mightier than the sword now grabs the air guitar in the name of peace.
In addition to the year-round functioning Oulu Comics Center and the annual comics festival, comics library Sarjasto operates in the area. Librarian Soile Hirvasniemi will introduce the library.
This year the comics residency organized by Oulu Comics Center and the Liminka School of Arts welcomes the resident artist Daniel Og from Brazil. Tessa Astre from the Liminka School of Arts will interview Og on his published work and his thoughts on the nordic comics scene.
Comics are a fascinating and versatile means of expression. Oulu-born comic artist Mari Ahokoivu, who now works in Copenhagen, will arrive to discuss with the several aforementioned artists about comic strips and other viewpoints regarding the utilization of comics.
On the live stream broadcast, we will also present shining works of art and their artists of the Lumo Light Festival, which is organized at the same time as the Oulu Comics Festival, from 19th to 21st of November.

The Comic Strip World Championship 2021 competition starts with the theme announcement broadcast! Oulu Comics Center streams the broadcast from Malmö, Sweden on 26th of October starting at 5:00 p.m. (Finnish time). Broadcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RicK0qypobI
You can take part in the competition right after the theme is announced until the 30th of October 4:59 p.m. (Finnish time). In other words, the contenders have approximately 95 hours to create and publish a comic strip from the given theme and according to the instructions. The broadcasting venue is provided by Tusen serier publishing, whose goal is to open paths to the comics industry for new creators, and to support development of comics as an independent art form. Comic artist Mattias Elftorp (Sweden) tells the latest news from him and from the comics community at the beginning of the broadcast.
The invited guests and interviewees are internationally acclaimed comics artists Peter Snejbjerg (Denmark) and Mari Ahokoivu (Finland).
The ceremony is hosted by the Oulu Comics Center producer and comic artist Sami Nyyssölä (Finland). The executive director of Oulu Comics Center and cartoonist Harri Filppa (Finland) operates as a director in the background.

Participants must submit their comic strip by October 31st, 2021 at 16:59 (Finnish time zone) at the latest.
Venue:
Your comic strip (more information about the comic strip format) entry for the competition must be published on Instagram using a hashtags #peacecomicstrip, #oulucomics and #oulu2026. Instagram is the only way to participate in the competition and submitted work needs to fit into a single post. The post must be public. Here are instructions to publish your work on Instagram.
Participant Rules:
- All work must be previously unpublished.
- The comics must be created in response to the theme.
- The format and style of the comic strip is unrestricted, however the text should be in English to facilitate judging.
- Pre-registration is not required and questions about technical issues will not be answered.

The jury is made up of comic multitalents and cartoonists selected from at least three continents.

Rules for Jury:
- The maximum number of points awarded by one judge for one work is 20 points, the highest and lowest judge results are left out, and the points given by three remaining judges are added to make the total point score.
- The decisions of the jury cannot be appealed.
- Late entries will be considered, but in the points calculation system (copied from ski jumping) we will deduct 1.8 points from the final score per each hour surpassing the time limit.
