Comic Artists in Residence Program, Liminka School of Arts 2018 (FINLAND)

Artist in Residence : Cara Bean.
Cara Bean is the author of Draw 500 Funny Faces and Features and has been teaching art in the United States for thirteen years. Her work has been featured in Pen America Illustrated, The Women’s Review of Books, and Teaching Arts Magazine. She provides public drawing and creativity workshops which explore how the beginning of complex ideas emerge from the simple act of doodling on paper. Cara has taken a leave from her teaching position to focus on creating comics which speak directly to kids about mental health. You can check out her website at https://www.carabeancomics.com/
The residency was located in a small town in Northern Finland, Liminka, 30 kilometers to South from the City of Oulu. Liminka School of Arts is the oldest community college in Finland, founded in 1966. Students can choose classes from comics and fine art department to sculpturing.
Liminka School of Arts provides to the resident accommodation in a community apartments with a single room (10-15 m²), a large-scale of studios from drawing to sculpturing, and free participation to the weekend art classes during the residency period. Resident is justifield to buy low cost art equipments from the art store located in Liminka School of Arts.
Resident kept a four day workshop and open lecture at Liminka School of Arts during the residency period and one open lecture of two hours at the School of Arts.
At the Oulu Comics Festival the artist provided a 45 minute lecture. Residence was supported by Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
