Comics in Teaching
Oulu Comics Center invites you and your organization to join the Arctic Comics Seminar, held in 5 – 6 November 2015, in the city of Oulu, Finland. City of Oulu is filled with comics also in this year, when people all around northern Europe gather together in the Arctic Comics Seminar and the fourth Oulu Comics Festival. We hope artists, representatives of northern comics associations, culture centers and institutions providing art education in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Greenland, Iceland or Finland to participate in the seminar.
The event brings together people and organizations who are eager to spread the joy of comics in their own communities – or at least they want to know, how it could be done by teaching comics or using it as a tool. Oulu Comics Center organizes the second Arctic Comics Seminar in November 2015, in Oulu (Uleåborg in Swedish), Finland. The Arctic Comics Network was launched in the year 2014 by the first Arctic Comics Seminar. Now the cooperation and networking continues.
The Arctic Comics Seminar 2015 focuses on teaching of comics and using comics as an education method, and how to apply comics in practice in different cultural institutions. Purpose of the seminar and the network is to promote comics activities especially outside of the Nordic capital city areas, where this kind of activity might not have been possible or established before. The seminar is organized to strenghten the Arctic comics cooperation: Network members can, for example, begin a fruitful exchange of exhibitions, lecturers, and teachers, or organize a Pop Up Comics Center in cooperation with each other, as Oulu Comics did last fall in Tromsø, Norway.
The seminar programme consists of speeches on comics teaching and using comics as a tool in every day life in culture institutions and schools, for example. During the event, variety of program is guaranteed, since the seminar is held together with the Oulu Comics Festival that takes place in November 5 – 8. All quests are welcome to join also the Oulu Comics Festival.

Comics workshops for elderly people
Cartoonist, Comic Teacher / Comics Center – Helsinki, Finland
The so called senior citizens are a heterogenous group of people, like any other age group. That being said, there are some cornerstones to lean on when planning comics workshops for the elderly. I have worked with a group of active senior citizens who were interested in comics and other arts, with a group of elderly people with memory malfunctions, who were more or less forced to participate, and a group of grandparents who came together with their grandchildren.
This has given me enlightening experiences of how different people can be within the same age group. Nevertheless, they have at least one thing in common: a lot of stories and interesting bits of personal history that are worth passing on to younger generations, in both pictures and words.

Why art has the role of questioning
Comic Artist, Denmark
Rikke Villadsen will talk about her artistic work with comics and the importance of being anarchistic and surreal. Her two graphic novels Ind fra Havet (2011) and Et knald til (2014) are stories on the sailor and the cowboy. Both are stories in which the use of intertextual figures and reference to cultural heritage are frequent. Rikke Villadsen will tell about the function of being a filter of original stories, and how the work is a playful experiment and comment on well known genres and big themes.

Fun Zines: Short history of small press publishing in Finland
The Fanzine culture started in the beginning of last century. Small pamphlets were done as propaganda or correspondence between people with similar interests. First zines were political or religious, later especially friends of science fiction started doing their literary fanzines with short stories and interviews with authors. Then came film, music and comic fans, spreading information about things that were ”too small” for the mainstream media. Many anonymous artists became known via fans and fanzines, Carl Barks for example.
In Finland especially years 1975 – 1985 were golden times for zines. Feels like everybody and their friends were doing small magazines. Photocopiers had developed to the level where anyone could afford to do an own zine. So we got Pahkasika, Suuri Kurpitsa, Nalleposti, Zärpä, Hilse, Noniin… and hundreds of other little zines that surfaced for a moment and then dived again under ground. Some writers and artists disappeared forever, some became professionals and even legends – because of the fanzines.
Vesa Kataisto works as an editor at Arctic Banana publishing company. He is a member of the board of Finnish Comics society.
